International News Regarding Brazil Flooding: Brazil Floods In Rio Grande do Sul: Residents Stranded on Rooftops
Storms produced floods in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, killing at least six people and leaving more than a dozen others missing.
Helicopters are flying over the area looking for those who have been left stranded.
In other regions, the flooding is so severe that helicopters are unable to land and must lift residents to safety.
The state’s governor has petitioned the federal government for assistance.
“President Lula, please provide as much air help as feasible to RS [Rio Grande do Sul]. We need to rescue hundreds of people in dozens of communities who are in need of help as a result of the heavy rain that has already fallen and will continue to pour in the coming days,” Governor Eduardo Leite posted on X, previously Twitter.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reacted, stating that the federal government will “join the efforts of state governments and municipalities to get through this difficult time, which is the result of climate change affecting the planet”.
Officials said six individuals were slain. Two individuals died after their automobile was washed away by floods in Paverama, a tiny village. Another person perished in a landslide in Salvador do Sul.
Eighteen individuals are still missing. Sinimbu’s mayor told the G1 news site that her community was going through “a nightmare”.
Residents of Candelária went to their rooftops as their homes filled with water.
Bridges have fallen, rendering more than 20 streets unusable, making it difficult for rescue responders to reach the impacted neighborhoods.
Meteorologists forecast that a cold front will sweep across the region, bringing more rain.
Last year, a storm in Rio Grande do Sul killed more than thirty people.
El Niño, according to Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology, has caused increased rainfall intensity and frequency.
