GHS Confirms Cholera Outbreak In Greater Accra Region
GHS confirms a Cholera outbreak in the Greater Accra region ahead of the Christmas festive season. The public has been urged and warned to follow directives to avoid creating breeding homes for these carriers.
In a surprising turn of events, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has released an official statement regarding the outbreak of Cholera cases in the Greater Accra region.
The first cholera case was reported on October 4th, 2024, when a patient presented at a health facility with symptoms of cholera such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. According to the report, the particular individual had returned from a funeral in Ada East. Upon diagnosing this particular patient, a total of nine cholera cases have been confirmed. These cases were reported as of October 11, 2024, in Ada East and West.
In response to this outbreak, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has activated the Public Health Emergency Management Committees (PHEMCs) at district, regional, and National levels. Representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and other Environmental Health Units.
“The Ghana Health Service confirmed a case of cholera in the Ada West District of Greater Accra region on 4th October 2024. The person presented to the health facility with vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain a couple of days after attending a funeral in Ada East. Subsequently, Ada East District also reported confirmed cases of cholera. As of 11th October, nine cholera cases had been confirmed in both districts (Ada West and Ada East)”, part of the statement read.
Also, according to the Health Service, they are conducting an investigation and environmental assessment regarding the outbreak. An alert has been sent to all health facilities in the country regarding the outbreak of the cholera disease.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) urges the public to be vigilant and report all suspected symptoms of the disease in order to receive immediate and appropriate care. Symptoms of the cholera disease may include, vomiting, leg cramps, restlessness, and diarrhoea.
