The University of Ghana, UG Postpones The Commencement Of 2024/2024 Academic Year Due To The Ongoing Strike In regard to The Illegal Mining Activities In The Nation.
The postponement of the 2024/2025 academic year comes right after the random bed allocations were also postponed due to the strike. The University of Ghana’s 2024/2025 academic year was scheduled to begin on Thursday, 26th September with lectures starting on Tuesday, 1st October 2024. The scheduled date has now been postponed due to the ongoing strike by the Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana (SSA-UG).
The official communiqué released by the Directorate of the University read, “It is announced for the attention of students and other stakeholders that commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year has been postponed”. This decision was made due to the ongoing strike, “This is due to the ongoing strike action by various employee groupings”. The University then added that, all special programmes will proceed as planned, “Special programmes will, however, proceed as scheduled”, the statement said.
A new commencement date will be announced soon, “A new date for the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year will be announced in due course”, final part of the statement said.

This official statement comes in less than 24 hours after the remand of the peaceful protesters in Accra. These peaceful protesters were arrested while demonstrating against bad governance and illegal mining (galamsey). These peaceful protesters were denied bail as their cases were heard in an Accra court yesterday afternoon.
Among these arrested peaceful protesters are a pregnant woman, a diabetic, and an asthmatic patient. These peaceful protesters were arrested for fighting for the betterment of the nation. Earlier after the verdict from the court, the Ghana Police Service released an official statement which confirmed the arrest of these peaceful protests. The statement stated that some of these protesters will be kept in the prison for two weeks as there isn’t enough cells at the police station.
The Ghanaian youth demands the release of these peaceful protesters as the hashtag, #FreetheCitizens has over 150,000 tweets in the last 24 hours with popular Ghanaian celebrities joining.
