CEO of National Cathedral Still Receives Pay: Huge Payslip Pops Up Online, Makes Ghanaians Angry

A Payslip purported to be for the CEO of National Cathedral, Dr. Paul Yaw Opoku-Mensah, has surfaced on the internet, causing agitation among the youth and Ghanaians in general.

The National Cathedral, which has become known in Ghana as the ‘World’s Most Expensive Hole, has been a project filled with controversy, alleged mismanagement, and corruption.

Several posts on social media with the payslip attached have raised questions as to why the government is permitting the CEO to draw salaries when the project has halted and nearly all the board members of the National Cathedral have resigned and called for an audit of the project.

The payslip showed that the gross monthly income paid to Dr. Paul Yaw Opoku-Mensah is GHS 29,838.00, while his take-home pay stood at GHS 21,134.03. The information suggests that the overseer has been drawing salaries for close to two years since the project halted. This amounts to about GHS358,065 in gross salary terms.

Reacting to the Payslip, Malik Basintale, the Deputy National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had this to say on Twitteer: “PaySlip of one of the leaders of the National Cathedral. He is being paid for being the CEO (executive secretary) of the world’s most expensive hole. His name is Dr. Paul Yaw Opoku-Mensah. A candidate for jail. Yet innocent protestors are being arrested and remanded. More soon…..”

Per projected date of completion, the National Cathedral was supposed to be commissioned for use on 6th March 2024 to commemorate Ghana’s independence anniversary. However, the latest video of the construction site which popped up online during the NDC election 2024 demonstration against the EC showed all Ghana had to show for the huge money sunk into the project was a big pit which was turned into a swimming pool by demonstrators.

At the time of filing this report, GlobalCurrent24 had not sighted any response from government and the  National Cathedral board CEO’s Huge Payslip which has surfaced online.
