#FreetheCitizens: Ghanaians Voice Their Unheard Voices Over Bad Governance And Galamsey
Ghanaians angry over remand of protesters as they begin to voice their unheard voices. These Ghanaian youths demand the release of their fellow citizens.
The hashtag, #FreetheCitizens has been trending in Ghana after the Ghana Police Service arrested some peaceful protesters during their demonstration against economic mismanagement and illegal mining (galamsey).
These protesters were arrested and transported to an Accra court on the mornings of September 24th 2024. These peaceful and unharmed protesters were denied bail and hence, remanded as their cases were adjourned to the 8th and 11th October 2024.
These peaceful protesters were demonstrating at the 37 roundabout over the rise in illegal mining in the country and the effect its having on the water bodies. Illegal mining has been one of the major issues in the country these past years.
Among the arrested peaceful protesters include a pregnant woman, a diabetic patient, an asthmatic patient, and a man who was supposed to burry his late father over the weekend but was arrested. These peaceful protesters were denied bail on the afternoon of 24th September 2024 and had their cases adjourned to October 8th and 11th.
An old tweet of the incumbent president have surfaced online as he asked the citizens to criticize him if things go wrong when he’s voted into office. The old tweet was seen posted on the 10th of September 2014, two years to the 2016 presidential elections.
Several Ghanaian youths have shared their opinions on the ongoing crisis in the nation and the remand of peaceful protesters for two weeks. These Ghanaians are dissatisfied with the abuse of power by this government and have expressed their disappointment in the Ghana Police Service.
