The shocking news we woke up to today is the one relating to the CEO of telegram. Telegram CEO Pavel Durev arrested at the Bourget airport for alleged offences related to his app. The arrest came unexpectedly.
The 39-years-old CEO was travelling on his private jet from Azerbaijan. He was arrested due to the early investigation by France, which was backed by an arrest warrant. Pavel Durov, a Franco-Russian billionaire, was accused of not taking actions against the harmful use of this messaging app.
The agency that deals with the prevention of violence against minors with fraud inclusive, OFMIN, levelled the offences against Pavel Durov. According to reports, Pavel Durev faces potential indictment. Also, in other news, the lawyer of Pavel Durev disclosed that the arrest of his client is “absolutely ridiculous”, he declared.
Mr. Pavel Durov was arrested by the French police at the Le Bourget Airport in Paris on Saturday evening. Previously, the CEO had denied all allegations laid against him. The app was reported for the use of fraud, drug trafficking, among others.
However, one of the investigators on the telegram case disclosed to the media how shocked he is regarding Pavel Durev’s entry to France when he was aware of the arrest warrant against him. Moreover, the Russian embassy has demanded consular access to Pavel Durov. They also demanded his rights be ensured and respected.
Upon their request, the Russian agency has denied any relations with France hence they say, France has “avoided engagement” on the issue. The Telegram app which was created in 2013 by Pavel Durov and his brothers in Russia has about 1 billion users as of now. Pavel Durov fled Russia in 2014 to search for a home for his app. He travelled to places like San Francisco and Berlin.
The app, until 2022, Telegram became the main source of unfiltered graphic content. The app is also used by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and some officials.
