A Minnesota state senator was detained and charged with first-degree burglary, according to authorities.
Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell was apprehended after being discovered inside a residence in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, approximately four hours northwest of Woodbury, where she represents.
Mitchell, 49, was arrested at Becker County Jail on Monday and is being held on a burglary charge, Todd said.
According to Todd, police responded to a burglary report from a homeowner at 4:45 a.m. on Monday. Officers discovered a lady inside the home, whom they later identified as Mitchell.
According to county property tax data from 2022, Mitchell’s stepmother and her late father lived on the street where the suspected crime occurred, according to the Star Tribune.
Mitchell was elected in 2022, and she is still serving her first term. Previously, she worked as a TV meteorologist and an Air National Guard commander.
The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labour Party Caucus declined to comment, but did say it was “aware of the situation,” according to CBS News.
“The public expects legislators to meet a high standard of conduct,” Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson told CBS News. “As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the Legislature.”
According to the complaint, Mitchell stated, “I know I did something bad,” after being read her Miranda rights by an officer.
Mitchell received a restraining order on Tuesday. According to MPR News, a judge approved Mitchell’s release on the condition that she not contact her stepmother or leave the state without court authorization.
Mitchell is scheduled to appear to court on June 10. Mitchell has not officially addressed the event. Her government office did not return a request for comment.
The event happened early Monday morning. Around 4:45 a.m. local time, Detroit Lakes Police received a complaint regarding someone breaking into a house. The victim claimed that the suspect ran into the basement. Officers discovered Mitchell in the house, dressed entirely in black, with a black hat and a torch with a black sock covering nearby.
According to the complaint, Mitchell said authorities she entered the home through the window on the south wall of the basement. She also stated that one of the laptops in her suitcase was provided to her by her stepmother, which the latter rejects.
Mitchell represents Minnesota’s Senate District 47. According to her state office biography, she formerly worked as a meteorologist and an Air National Guard commander before joining the legislature.
