Numerous law enforcement officers were shot Monday afternoon while conducting a task force operation in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to police.
Officers from several agencies in the U.S. Marshals Task Force were conducting an investigation in a suburban neighborhood when “a subject” opened fire on them, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department post on X, formerly Twitter.
Multiple victims were transported to hospitals, and the gunfire lasted several minutes. Police reported that a SWAT team was in the neighborhood on the city’s east side.
Authorities did not specify how many officers were hit by gunfire. According to WSOC-TV, their helicopter captured an armored vehicle driving through yards and knocking over recycling bins before officers removed a person with blood on their shirt and loaded them into an ambulance.
Many roads in the area were closed to allow ambulances to reach hospitals faster. Police urged people to avoid the neighborhood and asked residents to stay inside their homes.
Fugitive task forces are inter-agency collaborations to locate and apprehend criminal suspects. The Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force is headquartered in Charlotte and comprises 70 federal, state, and local agencies.
The regional task force has apprehended more than 8,900 fugitives over the last six years, according to the US Marshals Service’s website.
Several police officers were shot in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday afternoon.
“Numerous law enforcement officers were struck by gunfire in an active situation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported.
The US Marshals Task Force, comprised of officers from various agencies, was “conducting an investigation in the area…when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject,” according to police.
Officials have yet to release the number of victims or information about the suspect.
Multiple victims have been transported to nearby hospitals, and gunfire is still active on the scene.
Residents are being advised to avoid the scene by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department as a “active situation” involving US law enforcement and an unidentified shooter develops.
After being shot, several law enforcement officers were taken to a nearby hospital, and a SWAT team is currently responding to the scene.
