#OccupyJulorbiHouse: Democracy Hub Protestors Remanded, Case Adjourned To October 8
Democracy Hub Protesters remanded as they were denied bail in an Accra court on Tuesday, 24th September 2024. These protesters were arrested during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration held over the weekend.
An Accra high court has denied bail for several citizens arrested during the weekend #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration. The decision from the court to deny these individuals were communicated this afternoon.
These protesters have been charged with five counts as they were transported in a bus under heavy security to the court today. The five counts includes:
- Unlawful assembly
- Assault on a public officer
- Conspiracy
- Offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace
- Causing unlawful damage
These protesters were detained in Accra during the rally, where they voiced out their dissatisfaction with the galamsey crisis and how the government is responding to it. Galamsey, which is the illegal mining over the past days and weeks have become a major concern in the nation. The arrest of these protesters occurred during their three-day protest at the 37 roundabout, Accra. These protesters raised issues such as the impact of illegal mining, also known as galamsey and the results of economic mismanagement on the nation.
During the second day of the protest, thus Sunday 22nd September 2024, a huge confrontation occurred between the Ghana Police Service and the Democracy Hub protesters. These protesters were then detained.
12 of these accused protesters have so far pleaded not guilty to the five counts against them. 10 of these 12 protesters whose cases were heard earlier today have been denied bail and remanded into police custody, and their case has been adjourned to the 8th of October 2024.

It makes no sense to arrest protesters, detain them, deny them access to lawyers, then bring them to court only to deny them bail—all for protesting against illegal mining. Why are the courts enabling such a blatant abuse of state power?
