The 10 Most Dangerous Cities In The World In 2024 – USA In The List?
Do you want to travel around the world? Then get to know the top 10 most dangerous cities in the world in 2024.
Traveling around the world can be a very rewarding experience. When you leave your home and travel to a new country or city, you can experience new cultures, interesting sights, and unique foods. However, not all places in the world are safe for tourists.
Unfortunately, some of the world’s most beautiful locations are also among the most dangerous. The danger in these areas is typically the result of corrupt governments or high crime rates caused by the presence of dangerous gangs, cartels, or militant groups. Before you begin planning your trip, make sure you understand the risks of visiting one of these dangerous cities.
You’ll notice that Mexico has a significant number of cities on this list. In recent years, drug cartels have taken control of large parts of Mexico. These groups are extremely dangerous and commit indiscriminate violence against innocent people. To stay safe, avoid travelling to Mexico.
To create this list, we used data from the Citizens’ Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice’s 50 Most Dangerous Cities report, the Global Peace Index, and news reports and university research.
The 10 Most Dangerous Cities In The World In 2024
10. Cape Town (South Africa)
This is the tenth most dangerous city in the world. Cape Town, South Africa, has always had a reputation for being unstable. The city was the epicenter of the country’s long-running race riots.
While the violence associated with riots and civil rights has subsided, the city is currently experiencing an increase in violent crime as a result of gang activity. There are over 100 different gangs operating in the city, and some estimates suggest that over 100,000 residents are gang members. In 2022, Cape Town saw 64 homicides per 100,000 people as a result of gang conflict.
9. Feira de Santana (Brazil)
We travel to South America to find the world’s ninth most dangerous city, as well as the most dangerous city in Brazil. Feira de Santana is home to 619,606 people. In 2022, 67.5 out of 100,000 Feira de Santana residents were homicide victims. Homicide isn’t the only issue in Feira de Santana. This city also has a high incidence of assault, robbery, and theft scams.
8. Uruapan (Mexico)
We move to Mexico to see the world’s eighth most dangerous city. Uruapan is located in a lush, mountainous area of Mexico. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains and green forests. However, Uruapan’s beautiful landscape is overshadowed by its high rate of violent crime.
This city had 72.5 homicides per 100,000 residents. The majority of the violent crime in Uruapan is attributed to two drug cartels competing for control of cocaine and fentanyl trafficking operations.
7. St. Louis (United States)
We arrive at our first city on the list that is not in Mexico. St. Louis, located almost directly in the center of the United States and near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, is a popular tourist destination as well as a thriving industrial and commercial hub. However, it has one of the world’s highest violent crime rates. In 2022, the city recorded 88 homicides per 100,000 people.
St. Louis also has the highest drug-use rate in the United States. It is important to note that the danger does not extend to the entire city. The majority of violent crime in St. Louis takes place in a small area of the city’s northern part.
6. Ensenada (Mexico)
As Baja California’s third-largest city and a popular beach destination, it’s surprising that this coastal city is one of the most dangerous places in the world. However, like the majority of the other Mexican cities on this list, Ensenada is plagued by violence. In 2022, the city had 90.5 homicides per 100,000 residents.
Along with murder, the city experiences a high rate of burglary, carjacking, and kidnapping. The city’s crime rate is primarily attributed to three rival drug cartels operating in the area.
5. Irapuato (Mexico)
Irapuato, in the state of Guanajuato, is a mid-sized city that serves as the heart of Mexico’s automotive industry. In 2022, this industrial city of approximately 470,000 residents had 95 homicides per 100,000 people. The majority of the violence is attributed to conflicts between three drug cartels operating in the area.
4. Ciudad Obregón (Mexico)
In this moderately sized city of slightly more than 300,000 people, 101 homicides occur per 100,000 people. This, combined with other violent crimes such as kidnapping and carjacking, makes it unsuitable for tourists to visit.
3. Ciudad Juárez (Mexico)
Juarez was once a popular destination for El Paso residents due to its numerous nightclubs, bars, and inexpensive souvenirs. Tourism has declined as a result of the violence, exacerbating the crime issues that often accompany poverty. In 2022, the city had a murder rate of 103 per 100,000 people.
2. Tijuana (Mexico)
American tourists visiting southern California frequently travel across the border to Tijuana. This city was once a fun place to party, but in recent years it has become one of the most dangerous in the world. With a homicide rate of 105 murders per 100,000 people in 2022, as well as drug cartel activity and an alarming rate of human trafficking and kidnapping, Tijuana is no longer a safe place for tourists.
1. Celaya (Mexico)
This Mexican city has the highest violent crime and murder rate in the world. Celaya, Mexico, had just under 625,000 residents in 2022, and there were 109 murders per 100,000 people. The violence in this city is caused by two competing drug cartels. Unfortunately, their violence spreads throughout the community, and many of those killed in drug-related incidents are innocent citizens.
