TikTok Bill Faces Uncertain Fate In The Senate
The TikTok bill faces uncertain fate in the Senate after the House passed the legislation bill earlier this month. The bill which has almost brought division in, is yet to know it’s fate.
The bill to ban TikTok in the US is rising day by day as Senate Tom Tillis disclosed that he had received over a 1,000 calls about this TikTok bill after the House passed a new legislation earlier this month on the banning of the social media app.
According to Senate Tom Tillis, the bill be passed if the Chinese shareholder of the social media app does not sell its share. Earlier, it was reported by GlobalCurent24.com that the US is threatened by wars in Africa, especially the advancement of technology in China and their major distribution to Africa.
Senate Tom Tillis, showed his greater support for the bill which he looks forward to help pass it. Tillis disclosed that, he is surprised as to how social media has had a major influence on the youth, hence, the numerous threatening calls he received about the bill.
The past years, the US Congress have brutally failed to pass bills that protects the young ones from online threats, and privacy for users on certain apps. Their goal together with President Joe Biden is to pass this bill once and for all.
Also, a former technology executive, and also the chairman for the Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner strongly gave his support on the bill before the Senate. Due to the withstanding conflicts between China and US, the US government is attempting all possible means to pass this bill. The government aims to ensure that China, one of their major rivals, does not access private data from US citizens on the app. Estimating, there are over 170 million United States users on the TikTok app.
Although majority of the Senates agree to the passing of the bill, but there has been roadblocks and some reluctant senates. Such is Maria Cantwell, Senate Commerce Committee Chairwoman. Senate Maria disclosed that, passing the bill is a process and hence the House should take its time to get it right.
Mark Warner further added that, the numerous threatening calls from the young people is a clear indication that the bill needs to be passed and stressed on the influence the app is having on these young ones.
Alternatives were provided on the topic which grabbed the attention of most US citizens, “banning of TikTok in US”. The alternative approach to this matter from the house is to force the Chinese shareholder of the app, ByteDance Ltd, to sell its share in order for the app to operate in the US.
Kamala Harris, Vice President of the US in an interview on Sunday talked on the trending matter. She addressed the issue of the app’s popularity and its greater benefits in terms of income to the American people. She assured the people that, the house will not ban the app rather deal with the ownership and force a sale from the Chinese shareholder.
