UG-UTAG Strike: Universtity of Ghana Students 'Likely' To Resume School Next Year
The UG-UTAG strike is still ongoing, even after Organized Labour and Senior Non-Teaching Staff suspended their strike after a meeting with the Government.
University of Ghana students are worried and keep wondering the exact day they will return to campus after their resuming date was postponed until further notice. The Senior Teaching Staff at the University of Ghana is waiting for the government to meet their demands and take definite action against illegal mining (galamsey) in the country.
Earlier this week, the Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), temporarily suspended their strike. Their decision to suspend their strike came in after a meeting with the government, which they vowed to meet their demands within the next two weeks. The SSA-UoG began their strike on September 16th, 2024 which made the University of Ghana Computing System (UGCS) and the Students’ Account Office close temporarily.
This was outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) which was signed on October 2, 2024. Despite the suspension of the strike from SSA-UoG, all University of Ghana students will remain in their homes as the teaching staff have yet to suspend their strike.
The Senior Teaching Staff of the school also released a statement for the continuance of their strike after SSA-UoG suspended their strike. They remain firm and continue to wait for the government to meet their demands before they suspend their indefinite strike.
University of Ghana students are kept worried and in the dark over the resuming date, as most of these students were prepared to resume school the same week the strike began.
Reports close to GlobalCurrent24.com reveals a likely next year resumption for all students. All continuing students together with freshmen might resume school in January 2025.
“This is just a reminder. School will resume next year with freshers. Despite labour’s and unions calling off their strike. A communiqué will be released from management. The plan is that UG can’t resume in November. Besides, December is all for election and holidays”, the source stated. In case University of Ghana resumes school this year, students will have election holidays and Christmas break as well.
