UG-UTAG votes to reject strike suspension from NEC
UG-UTAG votes to reject strike suspension, barely 48 hours after NEC decided. This decision comes a day after the National President, Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu, released an official statement.
After several calls directed to UG-UTAG from stakeholders to suspend their strike, the members of the community have voted to reject the decision to suspend their strike. The majority of the members of UG-UTAG are not in support of NEC’s decision to suspend its strike.
On Thursday 24th October 2024, an official statement was released on the decision to suspend the UTAG strike action against illegal mining. The set date to suspend the strike was Tuesday 29th October 2024, hence, it was in the hands of members to affirm the decision to suspend the strike or continue with it.
“In light of these, NEC, after thorough deliberations, has directed to suspend the strike action effective Tuesday, 29th October 2024 and is seeking members’ affirmation or otherwise of this directive”, paragraph 6 of the statement read.
UTAG who stood firm in its decision to proceed with their planned strike decided to suspend the strike by Tuesday 29th October, but members of the Association have voted to reject the decision to suspend the strike. Earlier, Organized Labor called off their strike indefinitely after a sit-up with the government, but UG-UTAG proceeded with theirs regardless of the pressure.
UTAG begun their strike action against the government on their inaction towards illegal mining in the nation. This activity has led to the devastating impact of our river bodies and forest reserves across the country.
In an election held among the members of the association, 226 members voted to call off the strike, whereas 290 voted to continue with the strike despite NEC’s decision to suspend. 56% voted against the decision to suspend the strike, whereas 44% voted in support of the suspension.
