The US embassy has revealed a shocking news regarding Americans buying Nigerian children and imprisoning pregnant women as well. The embassy she light on the desperation from pregnant women and young mothers to sell their children and some wanting to be on the ‘land of opportunities’.
Most Nigerian children are being sold to the Americans and some pregnant women also have made themselves vulnerable and these Americans do take advantage of them.
In relation to this, a 17-yearold girl from Enugu, Ebere found herself to be pregnant and was trapped in a dilemma. She had limited or no access to abortion resources or even antenatal care, which made her really question the fate of her pregnancy.
Ebere, saw that returning home was never an option due to the situation she had found herself. The father of the unborn child is said to have ‘took to his heel’ which left her with no support. Due to the desperation and fear from Ebere, she met a ma who claimed to be a social care worker.
According to reports, the self-acclaimed social care worker gave Ebere a way out, which was he would take care of her till she delivers the baby, which after she would have to sell the baby to him. With no option and no one to turn or depend on, Ebere agreed to it.
Per reports from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, young mothers such as Ebere, are lured into human trafficking due to the lack of access to safe abortion or antenatal care, or even a family member to depend on. Also, these babies are sold for around $1,5000 if its a baby girl and $2,000 if its a baby boy.
Also, per the meeting that took place among the Governors of Nigeria, they discussed the high rate of human trafficking which was brought to light by the American embassy. These American citizens engage in illegal activities into adopting Nigerian children. Members from this meeting highly pledged that they will collaborate with the right ministries to put a stop to this incidents.
According to the United Nations Population Fund, teenage pregnancy is highly correlated to child marriage and is very common in Nigeria. Additionally, Nigeria faces complex teenage pregnancy situations.
These revelations from the US embassy raises a high awareness to everyone especially pregnant women.
The Federal Government of Nigeria is yet to release an official communique to the general public and the world in addressing this issue brought to light by the United States embassy.
