History Made! Congolese Woman Excels in Beekeeping

Congolese Woman Excels in Beekeeping - GlobalCurrent24.com
In the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a Congolese woman excels in beekeeping. This is a testament to the application of the theory she learnt in school on ‘pollination’.
Women entrepreneurs in Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, continue to attract the attention of the business world due to their inventiveness and persistence. Deborah Nzarubara, 30, is a Central African beekeeping pioneer who has been recognized across the world for the quality of her honey and its commitment to environmental preservation.
She has become a world-renowned beekeeper thanks to her boldness and determination to disprove the idea that women and bees cannot coexist.
She recalls that as a child, she enjoyed just watching at bees. People used to tell her that a woman couldn’t be a beekeeper because if she tried, the bees would go. It was not true.
Nzarubara’s first move in altering the game was to form an association to promote awareness about the environmental benefits of bee conservation, and then establish a company around it.
When she realized she was producing a lot for her association, she decided to create a business. She now sells honey and beeswax through her firm, Green Community Mind (GRECOM), turns honey into ointments, and conducts training courses for budding beekeepers.
GRECOM has already educated over 1,500 beekeepers, including 100 women like Rehema Mapendo, who now supports her family via beekeeping.
She says she now has at least eight hives from which she gathers honey. Selling it helps her pay her school fees and other family expenses.
Emmanuel Ndimwiza, an environmental specialist, emphasizes the critical ecological role of bees and recommends that Congolese politicians pass laws to safeguard the increasingly endangered species.
He claims that bees are essential for pollination, since fruit cannot be produced without them. Bees pollinate by moving from blossom to flower, fertilizing the plants. Today, if bees disappeared, as Albert Einstein famously stated, humanity would only have four years before being completely exterminated.
In recent years, GRECOM has received several regional and international honors for its achievements.
