Sillinger was traded from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to the Canucks at the trade deadline in 1996, and he went on to play six playoff games for the Canucks that year, making Vancouver his second post-season team. He appeared in eight Stanley Cup playoffs, representing eight different teams.

Ian Cole is about to equal that record. Cole will have played in the Stanley Cup play-offs for his eighth NHL team when he makes his debut in 2024, most likely in game one of the upcoming first round.

It is a remarkable record. Cole understands how difficult it is for teams to make the playoffs.

He also understands that winning the Stanley Cup is far more difficult.

“You think you’re a good team?,” he recalled asking his teammates early in the season.

They responded, “Yeah.”

So he laid it out: “Do you think you’re a good player?” Only the worst teams miss the playoffs. Teams that have lost 10 games in a row.

“I said, ‘Don’t be sh*tty. Do not lose ten games in a row. You’re over.500; you should make the playoffs.

“Don’t make it seem complicated, it’s not that hard.”

According to Brock Boeser, management’s decision to add a veteran who speaks from experience as forcefully as Cole has proven massive. He speaks with authority, then goes out and does it.

“He is a good leader. He’s an effective communicator with guys. He always goes to talk to guys during intermissions and games. Regarding whatever he thinks. He’s very intelligent. And, obviously, he is extremely strong. Tough. Blocks shots. “He’s been terrific,” Boeser said.

Cole’s ability to consistently make the playoffs is the result of a lifetime of habits.

“Making the playoffs is the baseline,” that’s what he said.

In the playoffs, there is no room for error. Why should what you do during the regular season be different? There is no “I tried to do it” in Cole’s world.

Learn to do it. Learn how to absorb pressure. The regular season is just a warm-up.

“We’re so much better at finding the high-percentage plays.”
