Ten people are believed to have been killed when two Malaysian Armed Forces helicopters collided in midair at the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base in Lumut this morning.
According to initial unconfirmed reports, everyone on board the two helicopters died.
The M503-3 Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM) is thought to have had seven crew members, while the M502-6 only had three.
Both helicopters were undergoing formation training in preparation for Navy Day, which is scheduled to take place from May 3-5.
According to sources at the RMN Strategic Communication Unit, they will issue a media statement shortly. Earlier, a 21-second video went viral on social media, showing one helicopter colliding with the rear of another before both crashed to the ground.
In the same video, helicopter debris is seen falling to the ground near where hundreds of other navy personnel were practicing marching drills.
The actual cause for the collision of these two helicopters is yet to be known. The reports available to GlobalCurrent24.com indicate that there were casualties, but this has not been officially confirmed yet.
According to footage published by local media, one of the helicopters clipped the other’s rotor before colliding with the ground at a stadium.
