Lebanese Man Sanctioned By US Found Dead Near Beirut
A Lebanese man sanctioned by US found dead according to Lebanese state media and judicial officials.
Mohammad Srour, 57, was sanctioned by the US Treasury in August 2019 for providing “financial, material, technological support, financial or other services” to Hamas and his ties to Hezbollah.
He was suspected of transporting tens of millions of cash each year from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades. According to Lebanese judicial officials, he worked for the financial wing of Hezbollah.
Srour’s death comes just days after a local official from the Christian nationalist Lebanese Forces political organization was discovered dead in a Syrian border town near the northeastern Lebanese border. According to authorities, he was kidnapped by a Syrian gang in northern Lebanon.
The circumstances surrounding Srour’s death remain unclear.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, referring to Srour only by his initials, said he went missing for many days after visiting a money transfer facility to withdraw a sum made to him. The NNA reported that his body had three bullet wounds.
Two court authorities told The Associated Press that Srour was led into a woman’s home in Beit Mery, just east of Beirut, and shot six times. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in accordance with norms, said the probe will continue.
Intelligence officials believe that numerous people, not just the woman whose whereabouts are unknown, were engaged in the murder, according to court officials.
