Two People Dead After Vessel Capsizes On West Coast of Newfoundland
Two people dead after vessel capsizes on West Coast of Newfoundland, according to reports available to CBC and fetched by GlobalCurrent24.com.
Two people were killed after a vessel capsized on the west coast of Newfoundland on Sunday morning, near the village of Lark Harbour.
Long Range Mountains MP Gudie Hutchings announced on social media that two guys had perished.
“The sea gives and takes away.” I am devastated to hear that two young men have died at sea. “All the love and prayers in the world are needed right now for the families, the Lark Harbour community, and fishing communities everywhere,” she wrote in a post on X, the platform that was previously known as Twitter.
Condolences To The Families Of The Victims
FFAW-Unifor also sent their condolences to the families affected by this tragedy, as well as the towns of York Harbour and Lark Harbour.
“Every life lost at sea is one too many. “These lives were far too young to die,” the statement read on Facebook.
According to a post on the Lark Harbour Facebook page, the town hall will be available this evening “as a gathering spot for our residents to support each other in this time of grief.”
There was also a notice advising residents to avoid Park and Youden Road.
Premier Andrew Furey also stated that his heart was with Lark Habour and that he had spoken with Mayor Maria MacDonald, Hutchings, and MHA Eddie Joyce.
“I will be there to support the community through this challenging time,” he said in a statement.
Did The Casualty Result In Any Death?
Captain Trevor Ackland, a spokesperson for the Joint Task Force Atlantic in support of the Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre in Halifax, said four individuals were airlifted from a beach on the West Coast and sent to hospital after the vessel was discovered capsized.
He stated that the centre replied to a request for assistance from the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre in St. John’s after receiving reports of persons in the water. Ackland said a Cormorant helicopter was dispatched from the Search and Rescue Squadron in Gander to the incident, which was near Molly Ann Cove.
“Once they arrived at the scene, they proceeded to pick up and airlift four persons that were located on a beach,” Ackland said in an interview with CBC News.
“And they transported them to another location where they met with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and then those individuals were transported to the hospital,” Ackland added.
Ackland said he couldn’t guess on mortality but added the four persons were still alive when they were airlifted.
Sam Anderson, a fish harvester, was fishing around Molly Ann Cove and Rope Cove around 11 a.m. Sunday, when he noticed a cottage on fire on shore.
He observed a few of men on the shore, he added, and a capsized boat close.
“We followed the procedure, you know, contacted the Coast Guard radio, and tried to reach him.” We couldn’t get at him since the seas were too shallow and nothing we could do,” Anderson told CBC News.
