When the March 24 election took place, Faye was one of 19 candidates, with no apparent front-runners. As a result, most assumed that no one would receive more than 50% of the vote and that a second round would be required. After the polls closed, it was clear that Faye was on track to receive more than 50% of the vote, effectively winning the race. Within 24 hours, other contestants conceded the race to him based on preliminary and incomplete results.
According to DW, Faye’s primary opponent, Amadou Ba, accepted defeat on Monday when “provisional results showed Faye had won nearly 54% of the vote”. Ba won 32%. According to Reuters, it is an “unlikely climb to the top for an unlikely national figurehead”. Faye will succeed Macky Sall as president when his second term finished on April 2.
