Students at NYU And Yale Arrested Amid Pro-Palestinian Protests
College students at NYU and Yale arrested amid pro-Palestinian protests. Other university students like Harvard are also being arrested.
On college campuses across the nation, including Yale University, New York University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tufts University, and others, demonstrations demanding the divestment of college and university funds from Israeli military operations have not abated.
Following arrests and student expulsions from Columbia University, student protests—some of which have evolved into 24-hour camps and resulted in hundreds of arrests—erupted across the country.
Authorities say that on April 18, more than a hundred demonstrators were taken into custody at Columbia University, and a number of them were also suspended and kicked off campus.
More than 150 pro-Palestinian demonstrators were taken into custody at New York University on April 22, according to the police. About forty-five demonstrators were arrested on April 22 at Yale and charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing.
School administrators report that the protests on campuses have been mainly peaceful, with demonstrators and officials alike blaming unaffiliated people for acts of violence and offensive language. This includes the NYPD.
Some students have expressed concerns about safety resulting from the tension on campus, and in response, some universities have chosen to offer remote or hybrid learning options.
“Students from a variety of communities have expressed concern for their safety, and we have announced additional steps we are taking to address security concerns,” said Columbia University President Minouche Shafik. “The intensity of our disagreements has only grown in recent days. Individuals who are not affiliated with Columbia have exploited and amplified these tensions by coming to campus to pursue their own agendas. “We require a reset.”
Tensions have been high on college campuses across the country since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, when Hamas terrorists invaded Israel. The Israeli military then launched its bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, Israeli forces have killed at least 34,183 Palestinians and injured 77,143 others since October 7.
According to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at least 1,700 people have died and 8,700 have been injured. Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that he would visit Columbia University the next day to meet with Jewish students. Following the meeting, Johnson will deliver remarks and take questions about the rise in antisemitism on college campuses.
