In a conflict-ridden world, China has chosen to pursue modernization in its own country while forging “a community with a shared future for mankind” internationally, according to its ambassador to the United States, who spoke over the weekend.

On Saturday, Ambassador Xie Feng spoke at the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024, titled “Chinese Modernization, A Community with a Shared Future for Mankind, and China-U.S. Relations”.

Xie expressed his hope that the United States and China would work together to find the best way to get along in a new era based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

The ambassador stated that the world has changed dramatically, and that “we are now living in a turbulent time”.

He referred to the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

Some Challenges Encountered

“It seems that everywhere we look, we see powder kegs that can explode anytime,” he said. “Energy, food, and debt crises continue to emerge. More than 100 million people have been displaced, and 700 million are food insecure.

He stated that non-traditional security challenges, such as artificial intelligence, climate change, and biosecurity, are on the rise. “Worries grow that we may find ourselves in another ‘Oppenheimer moment’, and the very survival of human civilization is at stake.”

The ambassador stated that the world has once again reached a crossroads.

“In the midst of the raging torrents, we must unite rather than divide. China’s decision is clear and firm: “At home, we will focus on achieving Chinese modernization; internationally, we will forge a community with a shared future for humanity,” he stated.

According to Xie, a developing China will continue to contribute to the creation of a world of lasting peace, while a China in constant progress will continue to serve as a bridge for the creation of an open and inclusive world.

His Opinion About The ‘Green China’

He believes that a green China will continue to drive progress toward a cleaner and more beautiful world. And a peaceful China will fulfill its responsibilities to create a world of universal security.

“Currently, we are facing serious challenges in China-US relations. Whether the younger generation can continue to enjoy the eight-decade-long peace and development that their parents did is heavily dependent on China and the United States finding a way to get along in the new era,” Xie said.

He stated that China is “ready to take concrete actions to implement the important consensus reached” by the nations’ presidents in November, in order to make the “San Francisco Vision” a reality.

Xie stated that both sides must first develop the correct perception of each other.

“China never bets against the United States and never interferes in its internal affairs, including elections,” he added. “We are eager to be partners and friends with the United States. Is the US prepared to do the same?

Second, he stated that disagreements must be managed effectively.
