Teenager Denies Assault After Boxer Stabbed in Liverpool City Centre Brawl
According to local reports, teenager denies assault after boxer stabbed in Liverpool City centre brawl.
A teenager has denied assaulting a boxer who was stabbed during a fight in Liverpool city centre.
Anthony Dodson was knifed in the chest on Peter Street in the early hours of December 27, following a fight that broke out in the Safe House nightclub on Victoria Street. The 21-year-old was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition after suffering stab wounds to the heart, but was later said to be “on the right track”.
Reports Earlier Regarding The Incident
It was previously reported that two other men, aged 21 and 23, were also injured, one with a stab wound in the back and the other with a cut to the head. Both self-presented to the hospital and were treated before being discharged, as was a fourth man, aged 20, who also suffered head lacerations.
A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared in Liverpool Crown Court this morning, Monday, charged with two counts of wounding with intent against Mr Dodson and another man, Kia Robinson. He appeared via video link in a white shirt and tie, speaking to confirm his name and date of birth, before pleading not guilty to both charges.
His Previous Admission To The Violence
The youth had previously admitted to violent disorder and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon in public. He is now scheduled to face a three-week trial alongside eight co-defendants beginning July 1 of this year, and has been remanded in custody until that date.
Lee Duffy, Jordan Kinsella, Eugene Mason-Lamb, and George Miller have all denied intentionally wounding Mr Dodson. The former has also pleaded not guilty to the same charge as another man, Alex Murphy, as well as possessing a bladed article, specifically a knife, in public.
Miller, 20, of no fixed address, denies violent disorder, a charge that 19-year-old Duffy of Whitefield Way in Everton, 29-year-old Kinsella of Harrogate Drive in Everton, and 29-year-old Mason-Lamb of Hodder Road in Everton have admitted. Luke Bowland, 21, of Webster Road in Wavertree, has not yet been asked to enter a plea on the charge of violent disorder.
More Regarding This Violence
Three other people have been charged in connection with the altercation. Milne Critchley, 20, of Sprucewood Close in Anfield, Adam Draper, 21, of St David’s Road in Huyton, and Cameron Quinn, 21, of Swanside Avenue in Huyton, are charged with violent disorder.
Mr Dodson is the son of Tony Dodson, a former professional boxer who won the British super middleweight championship in 2003 and retired in 2016. Anthony Dodson, meanwhile, won the Merseyside and Cheshire Youth Championship final in 2020 and advanced to the national championship quarter-finals, representing Gemini Boxing Club in Speke.
“Knife crime has no place on the streets of Merseyside, and we are committed to finding the people who choose to carry knives,” stated Detective Chief Inspector Tony Roberts of Merseyside Police in response to the stabbing incident. In order to make it socially unacceptable for people to even consider carrying weapons, we need the public to speak with their family and friends.
“While people may be concerned when they hear about incidents like this, I’d like to reiterate that Merseyside saw a 22% decrease in knife crime in 2022/23 compared to the previous year, the second-highest reduction of any county in the country, and the force remains committed to further reducing knife crime and the devastating impact it has on individuals, families, and the community. We intend to accomplish this by collaborating with partners, educating people, and employing effective policing strategies such as dispersal zones, stop searches, and serious violence reduction orders.”
