Donald Trump, the former president of the United States is in court today, for his final hearing regarding the New York Hush Money Criminal Case. Before Donald Trump entered the courtroom, he disclosed these to the press, “This is a hoax, and a witch hunt, thank you”.
Judge Juan Merchan adjourned the selection of the jury for the case to April 15th. The jury selection for the ‘New York Hush Money Criminal Case’ was to begin today. The adjournment of the trial to April 15th was as a result of issues raised by Trump’s attorneys on the late potential evidence from the federal prosecutors. The introduction of the new evidence by the federal prosecutors involved over 100,000 pages of documents.
In a ruling released at the start of this month, Judge Juan Merchan stated that, there are some important questions which the court must get answers to before it rules on the motion from the defendant.
The defense attorneys demanded a delay of the trial due to the discovery of new potential evidence by the federal prosecutors.
The federal prosecutors handling the case replied to the attorneys of Trump, stating that, the adjournment of the trial to April 15th provides the opposition counsel and its client enough time and leverage to review all the new potential evidence and formulate new tactics to stall the proceedings to trial.
The federal prosecutors expressed their concern over the tactics used by the defense attorneys into pushing this case further and further away. They urged the defense attorneys to stop using these tactics.
Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on April 2023 to a 34-count indictment which charged him of forging records in linkage with a Hush Money Payment Cohen sent to Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress just before the 2016 presidential elections.
Cohen, claimed that the former president instructed him to send a whooping $130,000 to Stormy Daniels. Stormy Daniels, on the other hand, stated that, she had an affair with Donald Trump in 2006. Donald Trump, pleaded not guilty and stated publicly that, he did not have an affair with the adult film actress, Stormy Daniels.
Last week, Judge Juan Merchan denied the former president’s motion to bar both Stormy Daniels and Cohen from testifying. Cohen, in 2018 pled guilty to multiple criminal charges. Some of these charges included he making payments to women who claimed to have had an affair with the former president. The defense attorneys tagged him to be a liar, hence, his removal from testifying which fell short.
The actual breakdown and content of the over 100,000 new potential evidence pages in unknown, but according to the District Attorney’s office, most of the documents are irrelevant in the ongoing case. Federal prosecutors added that these potential evidence contains not more than 270 fresh documents, with about 172 fresh witness statements.
Stormy Daniels, on the other hand disclosed that she is ready to testify at Donald Trump’s hush money trial case.
