Down to Earth claimed that “Between March 18-19, 2024, at least five African nations — South Africa, Gabon, Kenya, and South Sudan — reported record-breaking temperatures.”
South Sudan recorded temperatures as high as 43 degrees Celsius on particularly hot days, while South Africa’s Twee Rivieren, Upington, and Postmasburg saw 43.7°C, 42.3°C, and 38.8°C, respectively.
One of the most concerning aspects of this heatwave is its duration. Heatwaves often pass quickly, but this one has lasted weeks with little relief in sight. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat worsens the consequences on both human health and the environment.
Egypt is currently experiencing an energy crisis, which is exacerbated by the hot wave. Every part of the continent, from east to west and north to south, is experiencing some level of heatwave.
NASA recently stated that “in March 2024, a heatwave scorched East Africa.” The high heat caused government officials to implement emergency safety measures, including closing schools in South Sudan for two weeks.”
With that said, these are the ten hottest African countries, according to Yahoo Finance. This list includes the average yearly temperature rather than the highest temperature that each country has recorded.
